  • What is DeMolay International?

    DeMolay International is a fraternal organization for young men from 12 to 21 years of age, which is run by its own members.

  • What is the purpose of DeMolay?

  • What is the difference between DeMolay and any other boys' organization?

    Membership is selective and based on election by current members. There’s a unique bond of brotherhood founded upon DeMolay’s ritualistic ceremonies — not secret from the world, but treasured within the membership.

  • Is DeMolay a Religious Order? A Fraternity? A secret Order?

    DeMolay is open to all faiths, requires belief in one living and true God, is not a Greek-letter fraternity, and while it has modes of recognition, its purposes are public.

  • What type of activities do you have?

    Activities span social (parties, dances, picnics), civic (charity, community service), and athletic (basketball, softball, bowling, volleyball, etc.).

  • What are the requirements for membership?

  • How much does it cost and are there any dues?

    Life membership requires a one-time induction fee, after which there are no ongoing dues.

  • What is the induction like?

    The Initiatory Degree and the DeMolay Degree are solemn, meaningful ceremonies emphasizing love of God, Home, Country, fidelity, and comradeship.

  • Am I a full member after induction?

    Yes. Full participation is possible immediately; voting, office-holding, and some competitions require memorization of obligations.

  • Who are some of the members of DeMolay?

    Notable alumni include John Wayne, Walter Cronkite, Dan Rather, Walt Disney, Bill Bradley, and Mark Hatfield.

  • Are there any girls in DeMolay?

    DeMolay is for young men, but social events often include girls; many Chapters have a “Chapter Sweetheart” and partner with Rainbow Girls or Job’s Daughters.

  • Who sponsors DeMolay?

    Chapters are sponsored by Masonic groups, providing facilities and adult guidance.

  • Who runs the Chapter?

    Elected youth officers lead, guided by an Advisory Council of Masons, Senior DeMolays, and parents.

  • Where do the parents fit in?

    Parents can serve as Advisors or participate in a Parents’ Club, offering support, skills, and refreshments.

  • What happens when a DeMolay reaches the age of 21?

    He becomes a Senior DeMolay — still welcome at events but without voting or office-holding privileges.

  • When, where, and how did DeMolay begin?

    Founded in 1919 by Frank S. Land and nine high school boys in Kansas City, Missouri. Now over 1,000 Chapters worldwide.
